OF THE NET
From four blinking nodes in a California laboratory to a nervous system spanning every ocean and continent — the internet did not arrive. It was summoned, fought over, broken, rebuilt, and handed to humanity before anyone understood what they had made.
October 29, 1969. A message was typed at UCLA destined for Stanford. "LO" arrived before the system crashed — an unintended greeting, the internet's first word. ARPANET, born from Defense Department funding and the genius of packet-switching theory, linked four universities. The age of distributed communication had begun its opening movement.
ARPANET // 1969Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn composed the score that every machine would follow. TCP/IP — the Transmission Control Protocol — gave all networks a shared language. Machines from different makers, countries, and architectures could now speak as one. This protocol remains the foundation of the modern internet, unchanged in concept across five decades of orchestration.
TCP/IP // 1974Paul Mockapetris composed the Domain Name System in 1983 — a hierarchical libretto mapping human words to machine addresses. DNS made the internet pronounceable, navigable, human. It is the silent translator that converts every address you type into coordinates a machine can locate, performing billions of such translations every second without a single curtain call.
DNS // 1983Tim Berners-Lee at CERN published the first website on August 6, 1991. HTML, HTTP, and URLs arrived together in a single burst of invention. His supervisor returned the proposal with the note "Vague but exciting." That vague excitement became the layer of the internet most humans experience — a limitless library of linked pages, readable by anyone with a browser and a telephone line.
WWW // 1991The dot-com era inflated like an overture played fortissimo. Google was incorporated on September 4, 1998 — two PhD students with an algorithm that ranked pages by links, not keywords. Meanwhile, billions in venture capital flooded into domain names and vague business plans. The bubble burst in 2000, but left behind fiber cables, data centers, and a generation of engineers who had learned the hard way.
DOT-COM // 1998January 9, 2007. Steve Jobs held up a rectangle of glass and metal and called it an iPod, a phone, and an internet communicator. Within five years mobile traffic overtook desktop globally. The internet became something you carried against your body, always awake, always connected. Social networks, streaming, the creator economy — all descended from that single performance on a San Francisco stage.
MOBILE // 2007Today the network carries roughly 400 exabytes of data each day. Submarine cables cross every ocean floor. Satellites blanket the poles. Artificial intelligence trains on the sum of all human writing. The "intergalactic computer network" Licklider imagined in 1962 arrived ahead of schedule — stranger, louder, more contested, and more beautiful than anyone in that California laboratory could have predicted when the system crashed after two letters and the night fell quiet.
